Thirty-two years ago Joe Calcagni developed the idea for the Community Service Recognition Dinner. The dinner is sponsored by the four major service clubs in Barre: The Lions Club, Altrusa, Rotary, and Kiwanis and benefits the Aldrich Public Library. A committee made-up of member of these clubs seeks nominations for the annual award. The committee pores over the nominee information submitted by their sponsor. The criteria includes service to the Barre Area community, is the volunteer's contribution related to their employment or extra curricular, who benefits from their volunteerism, and have they been previously acknowledged for their good works? The committee tries to give the award to community members who do their work quietly and without a need for praise.
This year the committee received nine nominees. Four individuals and a couple were chosen and the way they contribute to their community is varied and life changing. Chett Briggs, Harry Hinrichsen, John and Janet Poeten, Karen, Lauzon and Linda Livendale are this year's well deserving recipients. They will be honored at a dinner at The Canadian Club on Wednesday, October 9th beginning at 6PM. Tickets are $20 and are available at the Aldrich Library or through members of the service clubs.
Many communities honor one citizen annually, but we believe Barre is unique in having the service clubs sponsor the event and honor more than one community volunteer. We hope to have a huge crowd honor these great volunteers.
