The Greater Bennington Peace and Justice Center will hold a public reading of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, “Beyond Vietnam: Time to Break Silence.” The reading will take place on Thursday, April 7 at 5 pm in front of the Bennington Town Hall.
In case of inclement weather, the event will take place at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 200 Pleasant St. Following the reading, all are invited to attend the GBPJC potluck supper, meeting and discussion at the Unitarian Meetinghouse across the street.
Delivered in 1967, exactly one year before King’s death, the speech highlighted the links between militarism, racism and poverty in the struggle for peace and justice. King suggested a “a true revolution of values” to bring attention to the futility of never ending wars and the need to redirect resources to meet human needs.
