Total Trip Costs: $3,995 (add $300 for single room) includes:
▪ Orientation dinner with pre-trip class
▪ Round-trip airfare from Montreal to Havana and all visa fees
▪ 4 graduate or undergraduate credits
▪ All meals and hotel accommodations for 10 nights / 11 days
▪ 2-day agroecology course taught by lead Cuban agroecologists
▪ All registration fees for the International Meeting on Organic and Sustainable Agriculture held at a Varadero Beach resort
▪ Translation services (Spanish speaking ability not required)
▪ Farm visits, lectures and sight-seeing in Havana
▪ Ground transportation from Burlington to Montreal and in Cuba
▪ Two expert instructors from Vermont
Mimi Arnstein is a Vermont-based organic farmer, educator and agricultural consultant. She works with farmers to improve production and strengthen business sustainability. Her international work has included exchanges with farmers in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Haiti. Mimi believes that sharing ecological methods and philosophy is critical to creating positive global social change.
Margarita Fernández is an agroecology, food security and livelihoods specialist with 20 years experience working on participatory research and international cooperation projects in the Caribbean, Mesoamerica and Southeast Asia. She made her first trip to Cuba in 1998 as a volunteer in the urban agriculture movement of Havana and has been engaging with Cuba and its people ever since. She has led dozens of people-to-people exchanges and academic courses on the island. Margarita recently became the Executive Director of the Vermont Caribbean Institute and serves as an advisor to the Cuba-US Agroecology Network. She holds a PhD in Agroecology from the University of Vermont, a Masters Degree from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, where she studied urban agriculture in Havana, Cuba and New York City, and a BS from Tufts University.
