New York’s Emerald Trio comes to Montpelier for one concert this Sunday afternoon to perform “New Music of City & Country,” which includes music of two Vermont composers. The trio is Karen Bogardus on flute, Orlando Wells on viola, and Matt Castle on piano. They will play music of Piazzolla and Howard J. Buss, a Broadway medley, and compositions by Dennis Bathory-Kitsz of Northfield and David Gunn of Barre.
Bathory-Kitsz is represented by two compositions. “Importraite I” incorporates “extended voice” with the composer joining the Emerald Trio; he and the ensemble first performed it at New York City’s Spectrum last November. Premiering on Sunday’s concert will be “Centered Again,” an evocative, romantic, slowly building trio that was written for Emerald.
Gunn’s “Les Visions de Bellimar” is new to the group, but was premiered by Vermont Virtuosi in 2013. It is expansive, elegant, and jazzy chamber music that was warmly received at its first performance.
Among the other composers on the program, Piazzolla is known for his re-imagining of the Argentinian tango, with his elegant “Oblivion” presented in an arrangement by Emerald violist Wells. “Tennessee Suite” by Buss, a Floridian, is an original piece for flute, viola and piano. The “Musical Theater Suite” is an arrangement of four show tunes by Emerald pianist Castle.
The Emerald Trio’s “New Music of City & Country” concert takes place on Sunday, March 20, at 3 p.m., at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier. Admission is by donation.
