Sterling College Presents "Food Chains" Film and Discussion

Past event
Mar 24, 2016, 7 to 9 PM

As part of National Farmworker Awareness Week, Sterling College will be screening the exposé “Food Chains,” which sheds light on activists fighting to improve working conditions for farm laborers in the United States.

On Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m., the Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems and the class “Security, Sovereignty, and Justice in World Food Systems” will host a screening and discussion of the film “Food Chains.” This film focuses on an intrepid group of tomato pickers from Southern Florida—the Coalition of Immokalee Workers or CIW—who are revolutionizing farm labor. The film and discussion looks to focus attention not just on the food we eat, but on the hands that pick it. Farmworkers are routinely abused and robbed of wages in the U.S., and in extreme cases, they can be beaten, sexually harassed, or even enslaved. There will be a discussion immediately following the film with Sterling College faculty.

The film and discussion will be held in Common House on the Sterling College campus. This event is free and open to the public.
