On March 4th Vermont celebrated the 225th anniversary of becoming the 14th state in 1791.Join us on Saturday, March 19th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm for our own celebration with a review of the early history of Arlington, Sandgate and Sunderland between 1761 and 1791. We will have birthday cake and beverages, too.
Bill Budde, curator of the Russell Vermontiana Collection at the Library, will present this thirty-year period when our three towns were at the center of Vermont in the making. Arlington was the first capital of Vermont, Ethan and Ira Allen lived in Sunderland, and their cousin Remember Baker lived in Arlington. Daniel Shays of Shays' Rebellion fame lived in Arlington and Sandgate, Revolutionary War armies passed through our towns and the Green Mountain Boys actually worked to keep the New York claims on the New Hampshire Grants at bay.
