A Children's Opera in the Holocaust: Staging Brundibár
Dr. Anna Hájková, University of Warwick, United Kingdom
Main Street Landing Film House, Burlington
Wed. March 16, 7:30 p.m.
Free
Written in 1938 by the Jewish Czech composer Hans Krása, Brundibár is perhaps best known for having been performed by the children of the Terezín concentration camp no fewer than 55 times within the camp, delivering a continued message of hope. This talk offers a historical biography of Brundibár. Examining the composer, the creatives, and especially the actors, Dr. Hájková will explore the Terezín ghetto through the lens of a children’s opera, while placing the work back into the context of the ghetto, outside of redemptive narratives.
Theatre Kavanah and In Tandem Arts are presenting an original conception of Brundibár at Contois Auditorium for one more weekend, March 18-20 (tickets available at www.flynntix.org or by calling 802-86-FLYNN) To put Brundibár in context, we are offering the Brundibár Lecture Series. For more information about the series or performances of Brundibár, see www.theatrekavanah.org
