XOXO Special Sunday: Peace & Reconciliation

Sunday, March 13; $4 reduced admission day

As part of the museum’s hosting of XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness, ECHO is offering a series of special Sundays around topics of love and forgiveness. Join us Sunday, March 13 as we explore peace and reconciliation. We will share food samples from some of Burlington’s many cultural groups, explore ideas of justice, and consider ways to engage in conflict non-violently.

Schedule of Events
10:30 Love & Forgiveness Storytime & Craft
Children 0 - 6 will explore the ideas of fairness and forgiveness through a storybook and hands-on craft.

11:00 Multi-cultural Food Samples
Try food samples from some of Burlington's many cultural groups. Starts at 11:00 until samples are gone.

11:30 Nonviolent Engagement in Conflict with the Peace & Justice Center
Conflict is something that we are often told to avoid. It may seem that this avoidance is peace but if conflict is not addressed it will persist. This program will offer participants an opportunity to fully explore one tool that can be used to engage in, and de-escalate, conflict. Addressing conflict nonviolently can be an exciting and effective way of making change and growing as individuals and even as a culture, society, and community. If more people have the tools to actively engage in conflicts nonviolently our community will be better able to build connection and lasting peace. This program is best suited for people age 13 and up.

12:30 Repairing Harm through Restorative Practices with Community Justice Centers of Chittenden County
Restorative Practices offer a different way of addressing harm to individuals and the community. Rather than punishment, Restorative Practices encourage taking responsibility, understanding the impact of our actions, involving all people who are affected, repairing harm, and creating a positive way forward. This session is designed for parents and their children and will offer an experience of the power of Restorative Practices in action.

2:00 Film Viewing: Promises
What is it really like to live in Jerusalem? We will watch excerpts from the movie Promises, which follows seven children — Palestinian and Israeli — as they think about war, peace and just growing up. Living within 20 minutes of each other, these children are nevertheless locked in separate worlds. Through candid interviews, the film explores a legacy of distrust and bitterness, but signs of hope emerge when some of the children dare to cross the checkpoints to meet one another. This program is best suited for people age 9 and up.

About XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness
Through facial expressions, words, movement, art making and other hands-on activities, XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness provides families the opportunity to think about and explore feelings through a variety of activities designed to help them understand, appreciate, and express their emotions.
