March's Armchair Naturalist: “Creating a Shelter Belt”

Past event
Mar 17, 2016, 7 to 8:15 PM

In time for spring! On Thursday, March 17th, New Haven's Armchair Naturalist series presents “Creating a Shelter Belt” at New Haven's Town Office (78 North Street) at 7PM.

Is there a difference between a shelter belt and what is more commonly known as a hedgerow? What is a shelter belt?

Planted as early as the early 1930's, shelter belt plantings serve multi-functions including erosion control, protection of crops and livestock, wildlife planting, odor control for manure pits, lagoons and swine operations and as edible hedges. Learn how to plan for, plant and maintain shelter belt plantings and about their sustainability.

Speaker: Meghan Giroux, owner and director of Vermont Edible Landscapes. Native to Vermont, Meghan is deeply passionate about her home state, working alongside landowners and farmers to protect and enhance their natural resources. Her business is solely focused on growing perennial plants that sequester carbon, produce food, fodder or medicine.
