Classic Films of the 1950s with Rick Winston
Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Location: Beth Jacob Synagogue

Rick Winston is a former owner of the Savoy Theater in Montpelier and a film history expert. This illustrated lecture is co-sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. Free admission.

The 1950s were a fascinating time for Hollywood films. Several directors who began their careers in the silent era (Wilder, Hitchcock, Wyler) were in their prime; the studio system was in decline and independent films were gaining a foothold; exciting new stars such as Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, James Dean and Audrey Hepburn were making their mark; vital issues of the time such as juvenile delinquency, conformity, and racial attitudes were addressed, however timidly, while the shadow of the Hollywood blacklist loomed.

We'll also explore the role of Jewish directors in Hollywood during this time: the emigres of an earlier era (Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann, William Wyler) and the younger generation coming to films from television (John Frankenheimer, Martin Ritt, Sidney Lumet).
