Patchworks is still seeking a Morrisville location for its low barrier homeless shelter.
Apparently, Patchworks is not only going to allow individuals that are intoxicated or under the influence of illegal drugs to stay at their shelter, but they would also allow sex offenders a bed too.
In fact, that is the reason our local United Way backed out of the Patchworks homeless shelter effort. The United Way Board voted unanimously to back out of the Patchworks endeavor over a policy disagreement regarding sex offenders. The UW did not want to be involved with a shelter that would open its doors to sex offenders and or potentially bring sex offenders into the community from outside of the area for the use of the shelter. The Patchworks group chose not to bar low-risk or even high-risk sex offenders from the shelter. The shelter would also be open to sex offenders, regardless of risk, even if that sex offender was not in compliance with registration requirements or the court. These sex offender policies were not acceptable to our local United Way office.
Why should they be acceptable to Morrisville residents?
Voice your concerns and attend the Morrisville Planning Council meeting on March 1st at 7:00. Stay tuned for the location as this is also town meeting day and their regular meeting room will be filled with voting booths.
As a community our concerns should be heard and we can make a difference.
