Mayfly is a Vermont based duo that performs old-time New England and Appalachian music, as well as original songwriting on fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo and vocals. Julia Wayne of Charlotte, VT and Katie Trautz of Montpelier, VT have been playing music together for over 14 years, touring throughout New England and Canada. Mayfly intersperses close harmony vocals with strong instrumentals influenced by blues, ballads, and American roots music. Their 2007 album won ‘Best Traditional Album of the Year’ in the state of Vermont. The duo has performed alongside renowned traditional musicians from across the globe, including Swedish fiddler Anna Lindblad, Louisiana based musician Dirk Powell, and North Carolina’s Riley Baugus. Mayfly has also shared the stage with Crooked Still, David Boulanger, Sheesham and Lotus, Crowfoot, Pete Sutherland, Sheesham and Lotus, Bruce Molsky and other great bands and musicians at festivals in New England and Canada. In 2014 they released their second album as a duo, with the help of Dirk Powell, Louisiana based old-time and Cajun musician. The album crosses genres and integrates the old with the new. Included on the album are a couple of shape-note hymns, original folk songs, a cappella close harmony, and old-time fiddle tunes with a banjo contribution by Dirk Powell. They bring to the record a maturity and grace easily recognized in the confidence of their voices.
