Farms and small businesses are often interested in hiring employees and interns, but can get confused as to how to stay compliant with state and federal laws and regulations.

To address these concerns, Sterling College is hosting a free employment law workshop on Wednesday, February 24, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in the Career Resource Center on the second floor of the Dunbar Dining Hall. The workshop is tailored to farms and food-based businesses who are new to hiring employees, but any small business is welcome to attend.

Some topics for the training will include: the difference between an intern, an apprentice, and an employee; an introduction to workers’ compensation requirements; Social Security and FICA withholding issues; and unemployment insurance requirements.

“This is a great opportunity for new and first time employers to get answers about regulations for hiring interns,” said Louise Calderwood, adjunct faculty in Sustainable Agriculture at the Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems at Sterling College.

Later that day, employers who wish to meet Sterling College students for internships or other employment opportunities are invited to participate in an internship fair from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Dunbar Dining Hall. Employers will be able to meet students looking for an internship or post-graduation employment. Students at Vermont’s only environmental stewardship college are currently required to complete at least one internship before graduation.

“Internship hosts consistently rave about Sterling College students: they’re motivated, they’re hard workers, and they bring a unique perspective to the workplace,” said Carol Dickson, Dean of Academics at Sterling College. “This will be an excellent opportunity for future interns and employees to connect.”

Both events are free and open to the public, but require a reservation. To reserve a spot, email lcalderwood@sterlingcollege.edu. Funding for this workshop is provided through USDA Rural Development and Sterling College.
