Jane C. Beck Presentation at Pownal Library : An African American Saga
“Celebrating 50 Years of Service to Our Community”
Interviews and research started in 1983, with Daisy Turner, then 100 year old Grafton, VT descendant of an abducted West African slave, have recently been published by author Jane Beck: Daisy Turner’s Kin, an African American Saga. Beck, Vermont folklorist and founder of the Vermont Folklore Center, will share the dramatic multi-generational Turner family saga, photographs and outlook on oral traditions as historical sources. In addition to the slave trade/plantation era narratives passed down from her grandfather and father, Daisy related her own life story as a daughter of freed slaves in New England and a small hill town in Vermont where she lived to the age of 104. Daisy’s life story won a Peabody award in 1990, inspired a children’s book and a documentary film. Storyteller and poet, Daisy also recited Civil War poetry in Ken Burns’ PBS documentary, The Civil War.
Beck’s presentation will start at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 21st at the Solomon Wright Public Library, 97 Main Street. For further information call: 802-823-5400. FREE presentation
