All are invited to listen to the amazing true story of Shackleton's failed attempt to be the first to cross the continent of Antarctica. Jennifer Armstrong's book "Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World" is being read aloud in four installments at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Each installment can be enjoyed independently; you don't have to attend all four. During last Thursday's reading, Shackleton hired a crew and sailed south from England in 1914 with two years of provisions. His ship, the "Endurance," became stuck in the pack ice well before he could reach Antarctica. His men and teams of sled dogs were held captive in an icy desert. In the February 4 reading, we'll hear what happens to the men as the ice eventually crushes and buries their stalwart ship.
