What: Public meeting
Date: February 4
Time: 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Place: City Hall Chambers
In light of numerous City Council meetings with little or no apparent compromise in sight, Mayor Tom Lauzon finally suggested that those on both sides of the (chicken) fence gather for the purpose of trying to reach common ground. Considering the need to address budget and other relatively high priority items, Mayor Lauzon decided to table the poultry issue.
It seemed that our Mayor was hoping for a "meeting of the minds" gathering to work out something agreeable. You are encouraged to attend / participate in the meeting that is scheduled for Thursday February 4, from 6:30 - 8:30 in the Chambers at City Hall.
Without weighing in on one side or the other at this time, here's a brief summary of where things stand:
> Some residents have complained that chickens stink, are noisy, and keeping them is unsightly. This group wants to modify existing ordinance to an extent that many if not all residents would not be able to be issued a license to have a backyard flock of hens. Some of them say that chickens just don't belong in our City, and should be banned altogether.
> Some say that enforcement of current ordinance is the most important key to satisfying the concerns of those who say they have been disturbed by the presence of chickens, as well as allowing responsible hobbyists to enjoy their brand of happiness. They point out that current regulations already address all the (understandable) concerns that their opponents have. This includes revocation of a violator's license to keeps hens.
Also noted is that hens are already more regulated than dogs & cats.
It's the case that some of this scenario has made it to our March ballot as a non-binding referendum (Article 7). This meeting may not be what Mayor Lauzon had in mind two weeks ago, as it seems to be shaping up to be more of a public opinion survey vs.a genuine attempt to work things out. That being said, this meeting promises not to put you asleep in your chair. Your presence is valuable.
