Exploring the world's temperate old-growth forests: why conservation is still important in the 21st century
As scientific understanding of old-growth forests developed in the late 20th century, the U.S. launched unprecedented efforts to conserve its last remaining old-growth forests, mostly concentrated in the Pacific Northwest. Only in the last 20 years has similar awareness expanded to other temperate regions of the world, including the Northeast and upper Midwest, parts of Europe and Asia, and the southern hemisphere. In this talk, UVM forest ecologist Bill Keeton will present his work on temperate old-growth forests around the world, describing the ecological characteristics these systems share as well as unique and interesting differences. The talk will argue that old-growth forests remain a conservation imperative for biological diversity, climate mitigation, and the many other values these rare and precious ecosystems provide.
