New Art Show and Talk at White Meeting House Jan. 24

We just opened a new photography show at the White Meeting House, “The Wonder of it All,” by Montpelier photographer John Snell. It will be open through Sunday, March 6th and is free and open to the public. I hope you can check it out. Here’s more information:

Mr. Snell’s photos could broadly be described as “nature photography,” but his close-up perspective and ethereal compositions will have you looking at nature in a whole new way.

The works in this show are all taken in and around Central Vermont. Mr. Snell’s ability to see pattern, rhythm and beauty in the chaos and jumble of life is what sets his photographs apart and makes them so memorable. “Part of that comes from photographing the same places throughout the seasons and over the years, seeing both the changes as well as the commonalities,” he shares.

Although Mr. Snell’s images often appear abstract or otherworldly, his photographs are presented essentially as he saw the world through the viewfinder of his camera. “By viewing the world through a camera lens, I often see a fundamental beauty, and inherent harmony is revealed.”

Do you have to be an artist to enjoy this work? Absolutely not! While any professional or hobby photographer will be intrigued by his photos, so would those who enjoy time outdoors — from hikers to hunters and runners to gardeners.

Mr. Snell will offer an art talk, also free and open to the public, this coming Sunday, January 24th at 11:30 AM at the White Meeting House. He will discuss his work process and philosophy, and answer questions. I’ve had the chance to hear him speak about his work and he is an open, generous speaker.

Another intriguing opportunity to explore art and nature will be on Saturday, January 30th. Mr. Snell and another artist will lead a discussion about mindful walking and then lead a group on a brief nature walk. The event begins at the Waterbury Center Grange and is part of Winterfest. Stay tuned for more details!

This show is part of a series organized by Meeting House Arts, a collaborative effort to provide opportunities for local residents to enjoy more art and for local artists to share their work with the community. The shows are hung in the Waterbury Congregational Church at 8 North Main Street in Waterbury Village and are open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Questions or comments should be directed to Torrey Smith at 244-8581 or torreycsmith@yahoo.com.
