The Gin Game - Benefit for the Acoustics of Holley Hall

Past event
Jan 23, 2016, 7 to 8:30 PM

We will perform a staged reading of D.L. Coburn’s “The Gin Game” on Jan 23, 7pm in Holley Hall, Bristol. This one-time performance, produced by The Bristol Gateway Players will be a benefit to improve the acoustics of the hall. The suggested donation is $10 and refreshments will be available. The play runs 90 min with a 15min intermission. It’s for mature audiences.

The performance will be fully staged, all of the stage directions will be followed, but we will be carrying scripts. If we do it well, you won’t notice them.

The story: Fonsia and Weller, residents of a seedy retirement home, meet on the porch and entertain themselves by playing gin rummy. The card games begin in good humor and the dialog tickles, but their interaction becomes more and more testy as Fonsia, the neophyte, repeatedly beats the card whiz, Weller. Tempers flare and the language becomes quite strong. The playwright has carefully labeled the play a “tragi-comedy”. It is funny, the quips, send-ups, and put-downs are hilarious, but the drama remains basically a tragedy.

We did this 2-person play 20 years ago in Washington and it started us on our theatrical journey together. Finally we’ve grown into the parts. Come see us and support a better sounding Holley Hall!
