MORNING WORKSHOPS

Tole Painting The word tole comes from the French word for tin, one of the first surfaces to be painted by loading a brush with paint to apply shading and highlighting in one continuous brush stroke. Participants in this workshop will learn basic strokes and paint techniques used in tole painting. Everyone will design and paint a tray that they will be able to take home with them.

Paper Cutting After a short introduction about the history of papercutting, we will spend the remainder of the time cutting paper working with both flat and folded papers. Bring fine pointed scissors (I will have extra pairs of scissors if needed).

Quilting I plan to do a "table runner for the holidays or not" and will provide all the materials needed. Probably could accommodate 4-5 people at most.

Pennsylvania German Hex Signs Farmers have been painting designs on their barns for more than 200 years.Whether these “hex” signs are purely decorative or are painted to ward off evil spirits is often debated. In this workshop, participants will design and paint their own “hex” sign on round wooden circles that can be later hung on a wall.

Genealogy "Researching the Eastman/Beede Family Quilt Signatures." Nola will display the Vermont-made quilt that she inherited. It launched a 10-year investigation into the 53 names stitched on the cotton, crazy-quilt blocks. She will share on-line research tips as encouragement for others to pursue their own American heritage or genealogical quests . Sit back during the presentation and see if you can detect patterns of the lives involved in the making of this quilt. This workshop will be offered in the morning and afternoon.

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS

Pleine Air Painting Pleine Air Painting means painting outside in the open air. Participants in this workshop will carpool to the Martin Covered Bridge for a painting experience using French Box Easels, canvas and acrylic paint.

Applehead Dolls Early American folk art will be featured in this workshop. The applehead doll became a tradition with early settlers and have become popular again in recent years. Participates in this workshop will make an applehead doll that they can take home.

Early American Stenciling A stencil is a thin sheet of material with a design cut from it. The stencil isused to produce the design on an underlying surface by applying paint through the cut-out holes in the material. In this workshop participants will design and cut a stencil that will be used to reproduce their design on a ceramic tile.

Knitting

Counted Cross Stitch Counted Cross Stitch, is an easy stitch made onto a variety of fabrics. You will learn the basics, start a project you can finish on your own, and learn how this technique can be done on almost any woven item of your choice. Bring your glasses, if you need them for close work; even your reading “cheaters” may help you to clearly see your project.

Appliqued Aprons An appliqué refers to a technique in which pieces of fabric, or other materials are sewn onto another piece of fabric to create designs, patterns or pictures. Participants in this workshop will create appliqued aprons by sewing pieces of fabric to the apron design. Materials will be provided.
