At a recent Castleton Planning Commission meeting, the Commissioners decided to hold an Informational Meeting on Thursday, December 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the Castleton Town Offices at 1565 Main Street, where they will take public comment on a proposed change to the Zoning Ordinance which would allow certain commercial activity along Route 30.

The Commission has been discussing the possibility of incorporating commercial development along Rt. 30 from Rt. 4 to Drake Road by creating a new zoning district: Residential/Commercial 2 Acre. The district under consideration is bounded (a) by Rt. 30 from Rt. 4 north to Drake Road, following Drake Road west and then south to Rt. 4, and back to Rt. 30, and (b) by Rt. 30 from Rt. 4 north to Drake Road, then east to the bottom of the cliff and back south to Rt. 4 and back to Rt. 30.

This corridor is now zoned Rural Residential Two Acre. In concept, any change in zoning would include design conditions that protect the existing residential character while encouraging the economic vitality associated with commercial enterprise.

Public involvement, especially the involvement of landowners in the new district, is essential to the deliberative process and I encourage everyone to participate.

Note: I have prepared a summary list of all Uses proposed to be allowed in the new district which is available on request.
