The Swing North Big Band will present the 2016 Swinging Epiphany Celebration at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Newport, VT on Sunday, January 3 at 3:00 pm.

Swing North Big Band first presented a Swinging Epiphany Celebration in St. Johnsbury in 2012.  The Celebration is in a Lessons and carols・format re-telling the Christmas story with Scripture readings interspersed and interpreted by jazz carol arrangements and swing standards performed by a full 18-piece jazz ensemble.

The 2016 version of the celebration will feature a new setting of Mary's Magnificat・sung by Janet Edmondson to a classic Miles Davis tune in addition to arrangements by Bob Curnow and Gordon Goodwin  and classics by Duke Ellington.

Now Playing Newport is sponsoring the January 3 performance at St. Mark's.    Epiphany refers to the revelation or
manifestation of the deity.  While it marks the end of the holiday season, Epiphany also celebrates seeing God in human form, seeing the light of the Bethlehem star and and seeing the world in a new way.  A Swinging Epiphany Celebration is offered as a way to help people hear and experience the Christmas story, and jazz, in a new way.

The January performances will include jazz carol settings of Silent Night・and Go Tell It on the Mountain・along with swing standards like Out of Nowhere・and All of Me・  All the music will be offered to highlight the familiar prophetic and gospel texts that are part of the Christmas story.   While a Swinging Epiphany is designed as a worship experience to culminate the Christmas season, music lovers from all traditions will enjoy the program for it's exceptional performances, wry humor and deep spirituality
