For their final tour after nearly thirty years together, the all-female vocal quartet Anonymous 4 will perform a Christmas concert Saturday, December 12 as part of the KCP Presents Performing Arts Series. Show time is 7:30 pm at St. Johnsbury’s historic and acoustically exceptional North Congregational Church.
Anonymous 4 gained international attention with An English Ladymass, their 1992 album of 13th- and 14th-century chant and polyphony. Hailed as “a remarkable feat of historical reconstruction” by John von Rhein of the Chicago Tribune, the album was said to perfectly convey the atmosphere of a medieval English cathedral, and inspired greatly broadened modern-day interest in medieval music. By 1994 the group had three albums on Billboard’s classical music chart, and a strong start to what has become three decades of touring, with more than 20 albums to their name. While most of their work has focused on the Middle Ages, the group also produced a trilogy of albums highlighting American vocal styles, including their final CD, 1865: Songs of Hope and Home from the American Civil War, featuring Bruce Molsky.
Entitled “The Last Noel”, Anonymous 4’s 2015 holiday program is an anthology of some of their Christmas favorites, including songs and carols from medieval England; songs, hymns, and conductus from their very first concert program “Legends of Saint Nicholas”; and tunes from early America.
A National Endowment for the Arts grant enables a base price of $15 to this performance, and free admission to students ages 18 and under.
