The flood is remembered as the greatest natural disaster ever to strike Vermont, and stories of loss, tragedy, and heroism abound. Yet is is far more than an episode restricted to the history of a single state. Historian Nicholas Clifford examines how the flood and reconstruction help shed light on important facets of our national history, and help us us understand America's passage through the often anxious and difficult years of the 1920s.
Professor Clifford will also discuss the formation and work of emergency relief committees, the efforts to rebuild in a harsh climate, and the ways in which the disaster fundamentally affected Vermont's political and social development. He is co-author of "The Troubled Roar of the Waters: Vermont in Flood in Recovery, 1927-1931."
