“Valuing the “Unmeasurable” in Education”

The Rotary Club of Chester, VT welcomes Larry Carbonetti, former high school teacher, as the First Thursday speaker on Thursday, December 3rd from 5:30-6:30PM at the Fullerton Inn. There is no charge and no RSVP is required.

While it is easy to see education today as the delivery of defined and measurable groups of facts, processes and procedures, we should remember that many of the most significant and lasting outcomes of education do not lend themselves to measurement. In fact, often these life-changing experiences are not even recognized by students at the time they occur. This powerful and often emotional talk helps interested parties, especially teachers, recognize and appreciate the significance of their day-to-day interactions with their students. Filled with anecdotes, first-person experiences, and actual letters and other writings by students, as well as references to published analysis, the program helps to remind us of the complex, challenging, often frustrating, yet constantly rewarding components of the job.

Larry Carbonetti earned a BA in English from Juniata College and a Masters from Antioch University. He was a teacher of high school English for thirty years, ten in New Jersey and twenty in Vermont, where he and his wife, Jeanne, reside. In addition to his teaching, he served four years on the Board of Overseers for the Regional Education Laboratory for the Northeast and Islands; six years as English Department Chair at Springfield High School, Springfield, Vermont; coached basketball for 12 seasons; served five years as a yearbook advisor, and advised a chapter of the National Honor Society for five years. He has been honored for excellence in secondary teaching by the State of Vermont, Clark University, Williams College, and the New England Region of the College Board. He has taught graduate level courses for Antioch New England Graduate School, Norwich University and The School for International Training. In 2002, he founded Crow Hill Consulting, which provides instruction for businesses in writing, communication and leadership development.
