First Film Appreciation Seminar

Past event

Rick Winston will present a three-sesssion Film Appreciation seminar this winter in Marshfield, on the subject of Films of the Sixties. The sessions will be held on Saturday afternoons at 2:00, with the first meeting set for Saturday, December 5; the place is Pie in the Sky B&B on Beaver Meadow Road.
The 1960s was a time of turbulence and change, in films as well as in society. We’ll examine how the films of this era reflect their times - and how they affected the culture in turn:
Session #1 (Saturday, December 5): FOREIGN INFLUENCES. An overview of the masters of foreign film in the 60s - Fellini, Truffaut, Kurosawa, Ray, Antonioni, Bergman - plus a look at the various influential trends in national cinemas: the British “Kitchen Sink” dramas, and the French and Czech “New Waves.”
Session #2 (Saturday, January 16): CHANGE IN AMERICAN FILMS. How foreign directors influenced American ones, both technically and thematically. Changes in editing and directing styles, and a move away from Hollywood artificiality. Films with serious, “adult” themes, with more mature handling of sexuality. The emergence of American “art films.”
Session #3 (Saturday, February 6): AMERICAN SOCIETY ON THE SCREEN. Films that grappled with issues of racism and Cold War politics. The new, rebellious “anti-hero” and more graphic depictions of violence. The new and often political “underground film” movement.
