The U-32 School Board will be holding a second community forum on Wednesday, November 18, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in U-32 room 128/131 to hear from you about U-32's 2016-17 school budget.
The Board will be reviewing our latest draft. To bring you up to date on the budget story in a nutshell:
U-32's voter-approved expenses for this school year amount to $14.9 million. Under Act 46 we may only increase by about $170 thousand next school year before hitting the double-tax penalty threshold -- a threshold we refuse to cross (figuring that you don't want to pay a doubled tax any more than we do). But get this: our contractual obligations alone will cost about $370 thousand more next year, a roughly $200 thousand gap we'll have to close. And that's just for starters.
Luckily there are a number of other pieces in play that allow for some maneuver. But in the end, as the old song goes, something's gotta give. So unless you want to leave it to "what the fates might have in store from their vast mysterious sky," we'll be grateful for your help in deciding how to reconcile the irresistible force (cost pressures) with the immovable objects (Act 46 and our ability to pay more in taxes).
A 1st draft of next year's U-32 budget has been made public, though I can't seem to find it on any of the usual web sites. Please feel free to ask me for a copy if you'd like to check it out before Wednesday's forum. I hope you can make it!
