One of the best-kept secrets in St. Albans is the tiny pastry and savories shop called "Evelyne's" at #15 Center St., (888) 808-9290.

I found it quite by accident one day and was astonished by the mastery of the kitchen. Tiny layer cakes; cookies redolent with butter and intriguing flavors; individual pastries that would do honor to the best Montreal patisserie...everything you need to look great for holiday guests is freshly prepared locally. Be sure to try the chicken liver pate!

I just learned today that this Saturday, from 10-AM to 6-PM, Evelyne's will be holding an open house. For me, that is something not to be missed, and I wanted to share this discovery with my neighbors.
