This movie is a portrait of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, chronicling his life from the time he was discovered and recognized by senior lamas as a reincarnation to the time he arrived safely in exile to India from Tibet. Writer Melissa Mathison (E.T. the Extra-Terrrestrial, The Indian in the Cupboard) received a blessing from His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso to produce the screenplay and to interview him personally in order to prepare. The title of the film is Tibetan for "presence," which is one way the Dalai Lama is addressed.
