The Town of Colchester will hold its annual leaf collection weekend, Nov. 7-8 at Airport Park, for residents to drop off leaves and pumpkins at no charge. Gates will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

The park is located on Airport Road approximately one-half mile from the intersection with Porter's Point Road. Members of the town's Conservation Commission will be on hand to direct traffic and answer questions.

Leaves bagged in biodegradable paper bags may be put in the leaf pile but if using plastic bags, leaves must be dumped out as plastic will not decompose. No grass clippings or large tree branches please. These may be taken to the McNeil Wood and Yard Waste Depot in the Burlington Intervale or to one of the Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) drop-off centers that accept woody materials (including Essex).

The leaf drop-off is now in its eighth year and is sponsored by CSWD in collaboration with the Conservation Commission and the Town of Colchester. Last year seven 40-cubic-yard loads--a total of 49.82 tons of leaves--were hauled to Green Mountain Compost in Williston to be turned into compost for sale in bulk on-site and by the bag at local garden centers.
