The Positive Youth Sports Alliance of Essex is proud to host Taylor Coppenrath during our annual fall event and awards presentation on Tuesday, November 10th at 7pm in the EHS Auditorium. This free event is open to the public!
Former UVM basketball player, Taylor Coppenrath will be talking about work ethic, good sportsmanship, setting goals, and determination. He will discuss his experiences growing up in Vermont and becoming a college and pro athlete, and the positive adult influences in his life that helped him succeed.
Coppenrath is a Vermont native who played at UVM, and professionally in Europe for 10 years - where he won 6 championships. He was recently inducted into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
While Coppenrath has accomplished much as a basketball player, he has humble roots, growing up in West Barnet, VT. He didn’t make the varsity basketball team until his junior year in high school and was a multi-sport athlete, playing soccer all four years in high school. Former UVM Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tom Brennan describes Taylor, saying “he is us. He is Vermont. He is what every Vermonter aspires to be – the typical Vermonter – hard worker, diligent, honest, caring, team oriented. He was all of those things.” Coppenrath has recently retired from pro sports to be a teacher and coach at St. Johnsbury Academy, his alma mater. He is married and is a father.
PYSA is comprised of 13 local community and school based sports organizations, with the mission of “promoting a positive sports experience that will teach lifelong lessons through personal growth and healthy competition.” The group sponsors educational opportunities each fall and spring, as well as hosts annual Coach of the Year and Friend of the Year awards. Middle & high school athletes, parents, and coaches are encouraged to attend the free event. No pre-registration is required.
