Thirty years ago the Cold War arms race between the U.S and the Soviet Union had resulted in an alarming stockpile of 50,000 nuclear weapons worldwide – a strategy known as Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Politicians on both sides spoke casually of first-strike capabilities. At the time it was perceived as the greatest threat to all life on Earth.
On March 1, 1986 1,200 people from all walks of life set out from Los Angeles on the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament. Along the way they endured blisters, harrowing storms, financial disaster and internal dissent. They committed acts of civil disobedience and became a moving tent city. Nine months later a smaller but spirited group walked into Washington, DC with a clear and powerful message for President Reagan, Congress and world leaders.
“Just One Step” is the inspirational documentary of this 3,700 mile journey and the effectiveness of grass-roots action. Musicians Holly Near, Pete Seeger and many celebrities come out along the way to lend their support. The film will be shown on Saturday, November 7 at 7 PM at the Maple Corner Community Center in Calais. Suggested donation $5-$10. All proceeds will benefit 350VT.org., part of an international grassroots movement addressing the global climate crisis.
