The Salem Witch Trials began in the spring of 1692 when several young girlsin Salem, Massachusetts claimed to be possessed by the devil and accusedseveral local women of witchcraft. The trials resulted in the execution ofnineteen people, mostly women, and the prosecution of over one hundredmore.

Stephen Nissenbaum, an Underhill resident and Professor Emeritus, taught early American History at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and haswritten several books on the trials, will speak this week on the topic.
