Craftsbury Literacy Fair

Past event
Nov 14, 2015

The inaugural Craftsbury Literacy Fair will be held on Saturday, November 14, at the Craftsbury Public Library. The fair will feature activities that support the six early literacy skills: letter recognition, vocabulary, phonological awareness, narrative skills, print awareness, and print motivation. Stations will be set up to provide fun activities that support each skill, as well as information for parents, grandparents, and caregivers on how to help children develop these skills.

Activities will include making books, dramatic play, letter crafts, and finger plays. Special events throughout the day will include a puppet show, guest readers, author Tanya Sousa, and music for young children. There will be a free book for every child who comes to the Literacy Fair, and special gifts for home childcare providers.

The Craftsbury Literacy Fair grew out of the information and trainings provided by the Vermont Early Literacy Initiative, a collaborative project of the Vermont Department of Libraries and Mother Goose Programs. Librarians Jen McKenzie and Susan O'Connell have received training on infant and childhood development and ways to incorporate literacy activities into story hours as well as daily routines. The Craftsbury Literacy Fair is one opportunity to share these ideas and information with the wider community.

The fair will run from 1:00-4:00PM and families can drop in at any time and stay for as long as is convenient. The ideas presented at the fair will be most appropriate for young children, but everyone is welcome to attend. For more information, contact the library at 586-9683.
