A book launch of Burlington activist and Sister of Mercy Miriam Ward’s writings, Behind the Wall: Palestinians Under Occupation, will take place during the Vermont International Film Festival on Oct. 24, at 5 pm, in the lobby of the Film House, at Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center.
This book, released posthumously, is a compilation of Ward’s writings which represent over forty years of advocacy on behalf of Palestine. It collects over one hundred examples of her hundreds of letters to editors, as well as testimonies delivered and book chapters she wrote, all of which were originally published both nationally and locally. The publication is a comprehensive document of historical reference, tracing the issues over time, and sharing her personal insights gleaned during a lifetime of travel to and involvement with every level of Palestinian society. Miriam Ward died on January 17, 2014. In the year before her death, with the assistance of Madelyn Holmes, she selected the materials for publication. A committee of friends, including Dr. Holmes, Kristin Peterson-Ishaq, John-Peter Ishaq, Bob Green and Bill Coil, then shepherded the manuscript to publication, and are sponsoring this event.
The reception will feature a reading of excerpts from her book, and include light refreshments, and a cash bar.
The event will be followed by a screening of A Borrowed Identity, the coming of age story of a young Palestinian citizen of Israel, at 6:15 at the Film House.
