Come see an evening of living history, Oct. 16 and 17 in Stowe! David W. Rintel's one-man show "Clarence Darrow" examines Darrow's life, his impact on the judicial system and his quest to tackle issues of social justice.
The show kicks off the Old Shoe Production Company East Coast tour, and is a fundraiser for Stowe Theatre Guild; tickets are $15 for students and $25 regular. Bit.ly/clarencedarrowstowe.
Audiences may recall portrayals of Darrow by Henry Fonda in the play's debut, Orson Welles in the film "Compulsion," Spencer Tracy in "Inherit the Wind," and Kevin Spacey in the 1991 PBS Film and in the 2014 stage production at the Old Vic theatre in London.
The show relives some of Darrow’s pivotal experiences, including the “Thrill Killers” , Scopes “Monkey” trials and his defense of Eugene V. Debs and Dr. Ossian Sweet, which established his reputation as a leading legal crusader, civil rights hero and champion of the working man. During his storied 50-year career, Darrow saved 102 people from the death penalty, fought against intolerance and racism, and never lost sight of the connection between crime and poverty.
