Call to Residents, Land-Owners and Taxpayers: Invitation to Attend!

As you may know, the River Trail Committee has been asked by the Select Board to explore the feasibility of developing a pedestrian and bike trail along the Poultney River in town. At last year’s town meeting, voters agreed to explore the opportunity and we have been meeting to discuss and learn the challenges in making a trail a possibility. Such a path would allow alternate walking and biking routes to school and the village away from busy roads as well as providing recreational use for the village. We envision an unpaved path that is maintained by local residents and committee members on a voluntary basis.

As a summary from our previous Front Porch Forum post (Issue No. 833 October 1, 2015), a scoping study grant became available from the Vermont Agency of Transportation. The program provides funding (90% funded with 10% local match) for the completion of scoping studies of pedestrian projects with the end goal being safer pedestrian and bicycle routes. It was decided to apply for the grant, with the hope that we would be able to leverage the expertise of a professional consultant in delivering a comprehensive study at minimal cost. The grant was approved and awarded in September (although not accepted as of yet).

We will be hosting a public meeting October 21, 2015 at 7:00 PM at the Town Office to discuss pros and cons of accepting the grant (including expending up to $3,500 in matching funds) or alternatively completing the scoping study “in-house” by the River Trail Committee. We will discuss each option and expect to make a recommendation to the Select Board for final approval.

We are writing to invite you to attend the October 21st meeting to hear about our progress to date and to voice your concerns and opinions about the grant opportunity.

Thank you,

River Trail Committee
