September is National Recovery Month

Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for substance use and mental disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. The Burlington Board of Health would like to share information about two documentaries that explore and discuss the issue of substance abuse and recovery in Vermont.

The Opiate Effect
Will Gates, a former UVM student, died from a heroin overdose in 2009. His father Skip began a journey to try and educate as many people as possible of the harm in not only the drug, but how we are dealing with the problem. Through the voices of Skip, his son Sam, former opiate abusers, The Howard Center, Senator Leahy, U.S. Attorney Tristram Coffin, Attorney General Holder and more; we find ourselves amidst reality in, "The Opiate Effect."

This film can be viewed through the CCTV link below, which includes an additional panel discussion about the issue with community leaders.

In addition, the film interviews a number of older addicts who share their stories of struggle and redemption. The film provides an intimate look at the often hidden world of addiction and recovery and reveals the many challenges that people face in confronting a relentless and difficult disease.
