World music star Julie Fowlis kicks off her 21-day U.S. tour at St. Johnsbury Academy’s Fuller Hall on Thursday, October 8 at 7:00 pm. Named BBC Radio 2’s 2015 ‘Folk Singer of the Year’ and 'Best Artist' at the 2015 Songlines World Music Awards, Fowlis channels the unique beauty and intrigue of her homeland through her performances, sung almost exclusively in Gaelic.
An impassioned singer and multi-instrumentalist, Julie Fowlis grew up on the island of North Uist in the gorgeous Outer Hebrides. She exhaustively researches and revives Gaelic songs, and while few people – including a mere 1% of Scots – even speak Gaelic, Fowlis’ treatment of the songs, her warm stage personality, and her explanations of each selection combine to draw audiences deeply into that other place and time.
Her crystalline vocals on the soundtrack to Pixar’s 2012 animated film Brave helped spur international acclaim for her talent. She was chosen to perform live at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which played to a television audience of 1.5 billion - far larger than the Super Bowl’s record 121 million viewers.
Fowlis has released six critically acclaimed studio albums and collaborates extensively with artists such as Grammy-Award winning James Taylor, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Canadian quartet Le Vent du Nord, and violin virtuoso Nicola Benedetti. The Scottish Parliament named her their first ever Gaelic Ambassador.
Radiohead's Phil Selway says of Julie Fowlis, "You'd need a cold heart indeed not to be touched by her music." Mark Radcliffe of BBC Radio calls Fowlis’ music, "beautiful messages from another world." The London Observer says, “A sublime voice that transcends language and culture”. And English comedian Ricky Gervais says, "She's great!"
