Bird Banding Demonstration on Hogback

Past event
Oct 3, 2015, 9 to 11 AM

Researchers from UMass will be netting migratory songbirds on Hogback this fall and outfitting them with nanotransmitters to study their passage through the Connecticut River Valley. Earlier this year they installed a temporary anntenna/receiver on Hogback, one of a network of nine, to capture the information transmitted by the spring birds they netted down in Hadley, Mass. Now they’re studying the fall migration, and they will be netting migrating songbirds on the former ski slopes on Hogback. Early morning is the best time for bird banding, so we’ll be meeting at 9:00 in the field behind the white A-frame building on Route 9 just west of the gift shop. HMCA Director Amanda Whiting will lead us on a short 15 minute stroll up the mountainside to the banding site where UMass researcher Aaron Hulsey will demonstrate how the birds are netted, documented and released. Please park in the big parking lot north of Route 9, and be careful crossing the highway. For more info on this and other Hogback programs, see our website: http://www.hogbackvt.org/
