Spend four Saturday afternoons in October honing your craft of writing at our workshops. Swap ideas and techniques. Get feedback from peers and professional writers and editors at The Bridge. Our program will close with a special section on poetry taught by Reuben Jackson, a published poet who contributes to The Bridge who also happens to be the host of Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio.
The first three classes will cover various forms of nonfiction, including storytelling, opinion and essay. We will read the work of writers we admire, read and share our work, workshop and revise during the sessions with the goal of getting published either in the printed or online version of The Bridge.
During our fourth and final workshop, Reuben Jackson will give us his take on the art of poetry. Jackson taught poetry at the Writer's Center in Bethesda, Maryland before moving to Vermont. He is also a radio commentator and music critic, who, while he lived in Washington D.C., was curator of the Smithsonian Institution's Duke Ellington Collection for 10 years. His poems have been published in Gargoyle, Beltway Poetry Quarterly and Indiana Review, and he is the author of Fingering the Keys, which won the 1992 Columbia Book Award. Currently, Reuben Jackson is the host of Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio and has kindly allowed us to publish his poems in The Bridge.
“What is really interesting to me is, ‘what is a story? how do we decide what is story’?” Asks The Bridge’s editor and publisher Nat Frothingham. We live and breathe that single question every day here. We want to share our inspiration and technique with the community as well as maybe create a sustainable venture.
No experience necessary, but experience is welcome, too.
