Hello Everyone! It's almost time for the 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer's!
Neurofibrillary "Tangles" are believed to be the primary markers of Alzheimer's, along with extracellular deposits of gray matter called "plaque" that build on the brain. While plaque will form outside and around neurons, tangles invade the cells. Over time, Alzheimer's has become known as a protein misfolding disease.
Someone develops Alzheimer’s every 58 seconds and on average will live for only 7 years after the initial diagnosis. It is the 6th leading cause of death. There is no cure for Alzheimer's and there is little knowledge as to why some people develop the disease while others do not. It is possible, that as the years pass, you too will fall victim to it.
As various parts of the brain begin to degenerate, "memories fall apart too. And then you're left with nothing, left not even with a ghost, but with its shadow." A shadow of who a person once was.
It is our job to find a cure. Whether we are doctors, scientists, patients, care givers, friends, family or we are simply the one organizing a bake sale to raise funds for research, our involvement is fundamental in making positive change.
