A Love Letter to Cuba - Told with Food

With diplomatic relationships reestablished and travel to the ‘forbidden island‘ once again a possibility for Americans, everything Cuban is hot! But, you needn’t wait until you land in Havana, to experience delicious Cuban cuisine for yourself or to learn about Cuba’s historic and vibrant culture. On Wednesday evening, September 16, 2015, Brattleboro’s Brooks Memorial Library will be hosting Chef and food writer, John Verlinden. Verlinden, who has been specializing in Cuban cuisine for over twenty years, and has been doing humanitarian work on behalf of the Cuban people since 2001, will speak about how Cuban and American history and culture and interwoven and signing copies of his critically acclaimed book, To Cook Is to Love. Attendees will also be treated to samples of the island’s delicious food and drink. The instant readers crack open To Cook Is to Love, they find themselves transported straight to Mami Aida’s home, where she welcomes them like old friends for a delicious dinner, shares her sought after cooking secrets, and tells captivating stories of her remarkable past. To Cook Is to Love is a multigenerational cultural tapestry of Cuban history, life, food, wine and music told through the heart-warming experiences of Mami Aida who emigrated from Cuba to the United States and raised her family. . To Cook Is to Love makes Latin food accessible to home chefs of all levels, with 200 easy-to-follow recipes that are accompanied by information boxes about the ingredients, cooking methods and presentation. Readers will not want to leave Mami Aida’s table until they’ve heard her entire story and tasted every dish!
