Friday, September 11, 2015, Middlebury, VT--The National Museum of the Morgan Horse (NMMH) announces a new exhibit of equine pottery and art titled “Back in the Saddle: 25 Years of Horse Play." This exhibit featuring a variety of work by Stacey Stanhope Dundon includes oil paintings, functional dinnerware, and decorative large scale horse heads. The show opens on Friday, September 11 with a reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will run until the end of November. The opening reception will be a Middlebury Arts Walk event.

Dundon is a potter who teaches at the Middlebury Studio School and at the Stratford House Pottery in Orwell. She is a featured artist at the Brandon Artists’ Guild and several other galleries throughout Vermont and Georgia. Her pottery is well known for its bold style which has a wood-cut look. It is hand thrown and salt fired; the decoration is done using wax resist and painting in the negative areas. After the wax dries, she paints a black slip over the whole piece. It is then high fired in a reduction kiln with just enough salt added to create a slight sheen. Her work often features horses, farm animals, and landscape scenes.

This spring, when Dundon was helping her parents move out of their house in Georgia, she discovered some work she had completed as an MFA student at Wichita State University in 1995: full size ceramic horse heads. When she saw them, she instantly thought of sharing them with the community by installing them at NMMH.

NMMH’s mission is to educate the public about the Morgan horse and its importance in Vermont and United States history. Amy Mincher, NMMH Director, is excited about the collaboration, “Stacey’s collection of horse-related art will fit perfectly with the Museum’s other pieces. The horse heads in particular are so detailed that they will give visitors the experience of seeing the closest version to a live horse.” Dundon will also have some work available for sale at the Museum.

Located at 34 Main Street in Middlebury, VT, the NMMH is open from Tuesday through Friday, 1-5 pm. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call the Museum at (802) 388-1639 or visit the Museum’s Facebook page to find out the latest information about events and exhibits.
