On September 21 at 4:00 PM, the Brighton Planning Commission will hold the first of two public meetings regarding planning for public hazards or, as it is called by FEMA, "Hazard Mitigation Planning".
This meeting is part of our effort to convince FEMA that we have done due diligence, and have done our part to plan for hazards that might involve FEMA, so that FEMA doesn't have to dish out so much funding for things that might have been prevented.
The way to FEMA's heart is through a Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP), and our Regional Planning Commission, NVDA, has obtained a small grant to help develop this plan.
The Town is required to pony up a small part of the costs of developing this plan, but the more the public turnout for these two meetings, the less the Town has to contribute. So, not only do we need and want your attendance to get the best information, but your attendance counts towards the Town's contribution.
Having a Hazard Mitigation Plan adopted also gets the Town an extra percentage of funding from the government in the case of a FEMA-declared emergency.
Please try to attend and pass the word.
Thanks,
Joel Cope
Town Administrator
