Dear Neighbors,
Nearly 140 Americans will lose their battle with addiction today. Of the 22 million Americans who are currently struggling with substance use disorders, nearly 44,000 of them will not live to see the next 365 days. Addiction is the most pressing health issue of our time, yet it continues to remain stigmatized and "hidden" in communities around the world.
I know this, because I have lived it.
Each September, tens of thousands of prevention, treatment, and recovery programs and facilities around the country celebrate National Recovery Month. We speak about the gains we've made in recovery and we share our success stories with our neighbors, friends, and colleagues. In doing so, we help to increase awareness and we provide a greater understanding about mental health and substance use disorders.
On Saturday, September 26th of this year, people from across the state of Vermont will gather together for an event called "Step Into Action; Join the Voices for Recovery". Step Into Action is a charity walk aimed towards sending a message of hope to the still sick and suffering. It's an opportunity to take a stand against the discrimination and stigma that many of us experience on a daily basis; it's a recognition of our loved ones who's lives are so deeply affected by our illness; it's a time for us to honor the lives that have been lost along the way.
If you're interested in walking with us, please visit our website www.recoverywalkvt.com to register and begin a fundraising campaign. If you can't walk, but would like to support this important cause or would like to know more about it, please shoot me an email. To make a direct donation to my efforts, visit www.firstgiving.com and search "Raina Lowell".
Much love,
Raina
