CRAFTSBURY CHAMBER PLAYERS
CONCERT # 6 AUGUST 19 --7:30 PM, at 1st Baptist Church, St Paul St, north of City Hall Park
MUSIC BY BRAHMS, PROKOFIEV & TCHAIKOVSKY

Johannes Brahms – Sonata in f minor, opus 120, #1 (1894) for viola and piano
“The warm musical voice for which . . . Brahms is known flows partly from his fondness for middle range instruments. He gives beautiful solo lines to violas, cellos, horns, clarinets and bassoons.”
Brahms originally composed this sonata for clarinet and piano; later rearranged it for viola and piano.
All four movements provide rich dialogues between the two instruments.

Sergei Prokofiev – Sonata # 1 in f minor, opus 80 (1938-1946) for violin and piano
A composer, pianist, and conductor, Prokofiev created “masterworks . . . for the orchestral, operatic and chamber repertoire.” His “music is popular for performers and listeners for its beautiful blend of tonality and diatonic , or scalar, harmonies with atonality and 'dissonant' material.”
This sonata begins with “a haunting prelude”, followed by a second movement “brighter in use of texture and harmony,” a “lullaby .. . of violin melodies” in the 3rd movement, and a 4th with folk dance and shadows to close.

Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky – Souvenir de Florence, opus 70 (1890-92) for 2 violins, 2 violas & 2 cellos
In this late work in four movements by arguably the greatest Russian composer of the Romantic era, Tchaikovsky “draws on folk material” creating lyrical and turbulent passages “featuring virtuosic bow work” among the six instruments.
Tickets $25 adults, $10 students, free for children under 12.  Preconcert talk begins at 6:45.
