In August 1808, three men died near the Ethan Allen Homestead at the hands of drunken smugglers attempting to evade Thomas Jefferson's embargo of 1807 in what has become known as the Black Snake Affair. However, this was not a straightforward crime, but one sponsored by the actions of several Burlington area professional men who associated with the killers and then sought to keep their involvement secret.
