“Behind and Beyond the Black Snake” with Gary Shattuck

In August 1808, three men died near the Ethan Allen Homestead at the hands of drunken smugglers attempting to evade Thomas Jefferson's embargo of 1807 in what has become known as the Black Snake Affair. However, this was not a straightforward crime, but one sponsored by the actions of several Burlington area professional men who associated with the killers and then sought to keep their involvement secret. Gary will present information concerning both the murders and additional background on the sponsors of this horrendous crime.

Gary Shattuck is a historian, former federal prosecutor, and author of the definitive book on the event, Insurrection, Corruption & Murder in Early Vermont: Life on the Wild Northern Frontier. Gary Shattuck will present information concerning both the murders and additional background on the sponsors of this horrendous crime.
