MUSIC BY BEETHOVEN, MARC MELLITS, J S BACH & BRAHMS
Ludwig van Beethoven – Sonata in C Major, opus 102, for cello and piano (1815)

J S Bach – Partita # 2 in d minor (1717-20)for solo violin with chorale fragments: 5. Chaconne
“The Chaconne is technically demanding . . . spectacular in construction – a theme of four measures and 64 variations . . . {that} progress in difficulty before a final restatement of the opening theme with more complex harmonies.” Mary Rowell performs this piece.
In his rendition, the cello (Frances Rowell) performs the chorale quotations discerned by Dr Thoene underneath the solo violin composition.
Johannes Brahms – Quintet in f minor, opus 34 (1864) for 2 violins, viola, cello, and piano
“Brahms broke new ground by melding traditional forms . . . such as the symphony and sonata with progressive tonal language. . . . Yet his music remains quintessentially romantic, featuring lush melodies and harmonies which express the humanistic nature of the period.”
