Greensboro Summer Lectures 2015 has had some remarkable speakers in Greensboro this summer – and that will continue as we welcome Miles Sherts to conclude the 2015 Summer Lecture Series next week. His talk is titled: "Conscious Communication – A Language of Connection," and can be heard on Wednesday night at 7:30 in Fellowship Hall at the Greensboro Church.
In this interactive presentation, Mr. Sherts (author of the book also called "Conscious Communication") will describe a range of relational styles. In particular he will demonstrate how certain habitual responses that we may think will help us connect better with others (such as advising, reassuring, or referring to oneself) often have the opposite effect, working to disconnect us from other people and keep conversations superficial. He will then describe the skills of what he calls Supportive Listening which better enable us to recognize and validate other people’s feelings and needs, and which can accomplish what we all really do want: to connect with others more deeply, comfortably and naturally.
Miles is accomplished in several areas. In addition to founding the Sky Meadow Retreat Center in nearby Stannard, he is the author of two highly regarded books: "Beyond Perception – A Guide to Meditation," and "Conscious Communication." After learning to meditate in a Buddhist monastery in Sri Lanka in 1976, at the age of 19, Miles has studied communication skills for more than 30 years, and has been a professional mediator since 1989. For more than 20 years, he has taught conscious communication skills at the Community College of Vermont and other schools; and he has led numerous private trainings, including working with the staff at Omega Institute since 2005. In collaboration with the Vermont Family Court, Sherts also has practiced divorce mediation for 10 years. He now works privately with couples who want to strengthen their relationship.
Mr. Sherts’ books, as well as information about his retreat center, will be available at this event. (There is no charge for the talk itself.) We look forward to seeing many of you there.
